Eric Trump weighs in on dad’s sexual harassment comments about Ivanka

Eric Trump is coming to the defense of his sister Ivanka after comments made by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump about workplace sexual harassment.

Perhaps one of Donald Trump’s most convincing and credible surrogates is his daughter, Ivanka. She has come to the defense of her controversial father on numerous occasions, denying that the Republican presidential nominee is sexist and, most recently, declaring at the Republican National Convention that he’d be good for women.

But when it comes to hypothetically defending Ivanka, Trump does not extend quite the same courtesy. In fact, during a discussion with USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers on Roger Ailes’ dismissal from the Fox News network amid a torrent of sexual harassment allegations, Trump made a surprising remark. Trump began by trotting out his defense of Roger Ailes, a friend and formerly one of the most powerful men in cable news, as he’d done before. Nothing unexpected there.

But then Powers made the discussion more personal and asked him, “What if someone had treated Ivanka in the way Ailes allegedly behaved?”

Trump’s response: “I would like to think she would find another career or find another company if that was the case.” Powers went on to note that Ivanka works for her father and – even if she didn’t — his considerable riches amount to a massive safety blanket that would allow Ivanka, were she harassed, to quit her job without already having other employment lined up and not worry about quickly finding one. Most women have no such luxury and often stay in jobs where they’re being harassed simply because they can’t afford to sacrifice their livelihoods.

Even more surprising, Powers points out that it’s not only Trump who subscribes to such antiquated thinking on workplace harassment. She noted two highly-educated and influential women who have recently made similar arguments about the sexual harassment allegations against the former Fox News chief.

Responding to the controversy on Tuesday, Eric Trump told CBS This Morning anchor Charlie Rose that Ivanka simply would not allow herself to be sexually harassed by a boss. “Ivanka is a strong, powerful woman, she wouldn’t allow herself to be [subjected] to it, and by the way, you should take it up with Human Resources,” Eric said. “And I think she would as a strong person, at the same time, I don’t think she would allow herself to be subjected to that.”

Eric also addressed how the Trump Organization views sexual harassment, describing it as “an absolute no-go.” He added, “We all run a company, my father runs a company, we take this — that is an absolute no-go anywhere, and that’s very much the case,” he said.

Megyn Kelly, who’s had a roller coaster relationship with the Republican nominee and has been the target of sexist comments from him summed things up neatly when she saw the headline about Eric’s response on Twitter. “Sigh,” the Fox News anchor tweeted.
