Majaliwa in Nairobi for sixth 2-day TICAD meeting today


The Prime Minister, Mr Kassim Majaliwa arrived in Nairobi yesterday to represent President John Magufuli in the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) scheduled for today and tomorrow in the city.

Upon his arrival in Nairobi the Premier met with various leaders from Japanese business companies who are also attending the conference. During his meeting with the Vice President of Chiyoda Corporation, Mr Tadashi Izawa the two leaders explored various opportunities available in the natural gas sector in Tanzania and the company agreed to provide training on capacity building to experts in the sector especially on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for export.

Mr Izawa told the PM that they had been pleased with the discovery of Helium in Tanzania, adding that his company had enough experience and technology in carrying out gas projects (Gas value Chain Planning and Execution).

“We have long time experience and technology of promoting the gas sector including helium. For example, we have the technology of separating natural gas and helium... we are implementing this kind of projects in Qatar which is the second country in producing the gas after the US.

He said that the training would be held from next year benefiting not less than ten youths, who had completed a Bachelor Degree in engineering.

Mr Izawa noted that a similar training was held in Mozambique for eight youth. The PM, however, commended Mr Izawa for their plan to provide training to Tanzanian youths, requesting that the company should also consider helping youths from the areas where the natural gas has been discovered to enable them manage some of the work at the field.

Meanwhile, Mr Majaliwa met with the Vice- President of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Mr Hiroshi Kato and talked about various issues including energy and infrastructure.

In their discussion Mr Kato assured the Premier that his would continue support for the country in various projects, including agriculture, health, water, and infrastructure. Mr Majaliwa, however, expressed gratitude for the Agency’s support in implementing power projects especially the Kinyerezi power project.
