Mwai Kibaki's Health Condition in South Africa Revealed

New reports indicate that retired President Mwai Kibaki is responding well to treatment at the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Mr Kibaki, 84, was flown to South Africa on Sunday evening for specialised treatment after he was taken ill at his Muthaiga home on Saturday.

According to a source familiar with his condition quoted by the Daily Nation, Kibaki is 'awake and talking'.

In addition, a close associate of the family told the Standard that Mr Kibaki’s health had “tremendously improved since he arrived in the hospital after suffering a minor stroke”.

According to the close associate of the Kibakis, the family expects that the retired President could be discharged by the end of the week.

“He is doing very well and we hope he will be released from hospital before the end of the week. He is in a very upbeat mood,” said the source.

On Monday, doctors at the facility are said to have stabilised Mr Kibaki and were carrying out tests to establish how to treat him.

It is also reported that Kenyan security personnel have been deployed at the hospital and Kenyan embassy vehicles could be seen at the parking.

There is, however, no official communication from the hospital about Kibaki's state.

Kibaki was first rushed to Karen Hospital where he was treated overnight and flown to South Africa by an Amref Flying Doctors air ambulance on Sunday, accompanied by his personal doctor, Dan Gikonyo.
