Embassy in Maputo to cost 1.316 billion/-

CONSTRUCTION of a building to house Tanzania’s embassy in Maputo, Mozambique is set to cost 1.316bn/- as the government seeks to shun renting of structures for its missions abroad.

In a related development, the government announced yesterday that it was looking forward to setting up an Embassy in Juba, South Sudan, depending on availability of funds. At present, Tanzanians living in South Sudan or wishing to travel there are served by the Tanzanian embassy in Nairobi, Kenya.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Mr William Ole Nasha, made the observation when answering questions from Mafinga Urban MP, Mr Cosato Chumi (CCM) and Special Seats MP, Ms Angelina Malembeka (CCM).

The deputy minister responded to the questions on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation in which he explained further that during the current financial year the government plans to undertake construction projects in Maputo, Nairobi and Stockholm, Sweden.

“Since development funds allocated each year are not adequate, the ministry has continued to engage the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Unit Trust of Tanzania-Projects Investment Development (UTT-PID) to undertake construction projects for embassies and investments abroad,” he explained.

Ole Nasha outlined other measures to raise funds as mortgage finance where some of Tanzania’s embassy buildings will be used to raise funds to renovate the existing ones and setting up new embassy offices and investment buildings.

In regard to South Sudan, the Deputy Minister said the government of Tanzania was committed to opening an embassy in Juba depending on availability of funds. He assured Tanzanians on the other hand they are free to explore trade and investment opportunities in that country since it is a member of the East African Community (EAC).

Mr Chumi had suggested further that Tanzania should set up a Honorary Consulate in Juba since it is less costly, but the deputy minister insisted that the aim of the government would set up a fully-fledged embassy as opposed to the consulate.
