Obama Promises to Stand With Kenyatta After Mandera Attack

US President Barrack Obama on Tuesday pledged to support Kenya after the deadly attack in Mandera County that left twelve people dead.

In a statement sent from the White House, Obama promised President Uhuru Kenyatta that America would work to “deliver a lasting defeat to terrorist groups that seek to undermine regional stability.”

The US condemned the attack on an African Union Mission (Amisom) base in central Somalia that left 17 Djibouti soldiers dead.

“The United States continues to stand with the people of Kenya and Somalia as they work to strengthen their security and expand opportunity for all citizens,” the US said.

“We will continue to work in partnership with regional governments and Amisom to deliver a lasting defeat to terrorist groups that seek to undermine regional stability,” part of the statement from the White House read.

Following the Mandera attack that claimed 12 lives, President Kenyatta was forced to cancel his official trip to Angola and instead sent his Deputy William Ruto to represent him.

“Following the attack, the President has called off his official visit to Angola to attend a security summit in solidarity with the families who have lost their loved ones, and those injured, whom he wishes a speedy recovery.

"President Kenyatta has asked the Deputy President, His Excellency William Ruto, to represent him at the meeting in Luanda,” a statement from State House read confirming the cancellation of his trip.

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked the Bisharo Lodge in Mandera town and planted bomb explosives killing 12 non-locals and injuring four others.

Despite Wednesday being Kenyatta's birthday, State House Director for Digital Innovations and New Media Dennis Itumbi, told Kenyans.co.ke that it would be a normal working day for the President adding that he had the Mandera attack issue on his table to handle.

"His first call on his birthday is to work and he has a Mandera issue to handle so he will be working," Itumbi said.
