Student Dies of Hypertension Minutes Before Start final Exam

Tragedy struck Jomo Kenyatta Boys High School in Nakuru after a KCSE candidate died shortly before exam kick off.

Gikonyo Francis Kuria died of hypertension while undergoing treatment at Bahati Sub County Hospital where he was rushed after falling ill on Monday morning.

The school principal John Mureithi said the deceased had a history of high blood pressure and had been on and off the school due to the condition.

He added they had sent him home last month to seek treatment.

“We had sent him home to his parents to discuss way forward and seek serious treatment since we were not sure on his condition. He was then diagnosed with hypertension and the doctors recommended that he rests for a while before coming back to school,” said Mr.Mureithi as quoted by Nairobi News.

“After taking him to the hospital last month his parents were advised on how to mitigate the blood pressure. The condition has been deteriorating as the exams approached,” he said.

According to Mr.Mureithi the candidate had a conversation with the doctors and they were optimistic that he would make it to the exam room but succumbed while undergoing hypertension management.

He added that the administration had taken measures to ensure that the rest of the candidates were not severely affected by their colleague’s death.

“We have organised for guidance counselling session for the rest of the candidates so that they are strong as they sit for the rest of the papers,” he said.
