Speaking in the city yesterday, the Special Zone Police Commander, Simon Sirro, said the amount was collected in three days. He added that they are from 10,676 offences committed by drivers and riders involving more than 9,900 vehicles, 3,112 commuter buses, 4,046 motorcycles, among others.

"We have already taken more than eight motorcyclists to court who breached road safety regulations," he said. In another development, he said the police on Tuesday at Msasani area during a special crackdown exercise killed a suspected bandit who was in possession of six rounds of ammunition and a pistol.

Commander Sirro said that the suspect died on the way to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) after he was shot by police while attempting to steal a motorcycle, the property of Ahmed Abdallah (27). "While the police were in their regular patrol, they suddenly heard and saw a motorcycle with registration number MC 754 AGV and they decided to pursue it,” he said.

He said that the suspect threatened to shoot the police with his pistol and they opened fire and shot him on the leg, but died as he was rushed to MNH. Commander Sirro said that the police was investigating the matter to get more information.

In another development, the police have arrested two people suspected to have stolen a TATA bus with registration number T 578 and a Toyota Carina with registration number T 288. He said that the suspects, Muloba Kabamba, a resident of Kimara and Alex Lyimo, residents of Kibaha in the Coast region have been arrested on suspicion.

"We arrested them for investigation purposes to establish whether they were involved in the theft," he said. Commander Sirro further said that the police also arrested two people who were found in possession of JWTZ uniforms. The suspects are Dickson Mtalemwa (27) and Manase Yohana (27), both residents of Pugu Kwalala who were arrested on Wednesday night.
