Panic as Lion Strikes, Kills School Girl

Residents of Magarini constituency in Kilifi County are panic-stricken after a lion stormed the area and brutally killed a school girl.

The stray man-eater is said to have invaded the 10-year-old's home as she was sleeping on Thursday morning and mauled her.

Reports indicate that the lion then dragged the girl's body into the forest despite efforts by residents to track and subdue it.

After hours of searching, the residents came across body parts of the girl scattered in thickets and took them to the mortuary for a postmortem.

One of the deceased's relatives, Katana Karisa, expressed his sorrow complaining of how wildlife rangers had neglected them despite making frequent reports of attacks.

"It is sad that lions are left to terrorise homes to a point of killing people and animals. This shows clearly that there is laxity among officers," decried Karisa.

According to area Ward-Representative Stanley Kenga, a pride of the cats had been terrorising the region for the past few months without much action from the concerned authorities.

“We have lost many goats and sheep. Now the lions have turned to human beings this is sad. As leaders we feel KWS does not care about the lives of those living in the area,’’ Mr Kenga was quoted by a local daily.

Early this year, cases of lions roaming within estates were reported with three of such being witnessed in different areas within Nairobi County.

In one of the incidents, a lion that was spotted along Mombasa Road attacked and inflicted injuries on one city dweller after a horrifying encounter.
