Police temporarily held Lowassa,Mbowe

POLICE in Dar es Salaam today temporarily held five Chadema top leaders including the party’s presidential flag bearer in last year’s General Elections and Former Prime Minister, Edward Lowassa.

Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Simon Sirro told the ‘Daily News’ in a telephone interview that the opposition party leaders were arrested after defying a police order that banned any meetings likely to enticing party members and supporters to participate in the planned September 1, countrywide demonstrations.

“We stopped these meetings because they are seeking to incite people into violence,’’ said Mr Sirro adding that the police were interrogating the Chadema leaders.

Apart from Mr Lowassa others who were being grilled by the police at the Central Police Station yesterday evening are the party’s Chairman Mr Freeman Mbowe and the party’s Secretary General, Dr Vincent Mashinji.

Others are, the party’s Deputy Secretary General (Mainland), John Mnyika and Mr Said Issah.

Prior to their arrest, the Chadema leaders were holed up in a meeting at A Dar es Salaam hotel.
