Dar es Salaam — With less than 24 hours left before the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) switches off counterfeit mobile phones, traders are anxiously waiting for the switch-off, while users have pleaded with the regulator to extend the deadline.
Traders selling mobile phones at Mlimani City shopping mall and Kariakoo in Dar ses Salaam told The Citizen yesterday that business had been poor since TCRA announced its plan to switch off counterfeit devices.
According to traders who spoke to this paper they were sure sales would pick up after the deadline has elapsed, but many mobile phone subscribers asked TCRA to consider pushing back the switch-off to allow them to buy new phones.
TCRA announced the decision to switch off counterfeit phones about six months ago, citing the health and economic risks associated with using fake devices.
