Samia urges support for United Republic’s war on corruption

THE Vice-President, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, has called on the people in the Mainland and in Zanzibar to support the Union and Zanzibar government's efforts to fight corruption.

Ms Hassan said corruption derailed development efforts by the government, courting public support to stamp out the vice. She made the remarks yesterday during celebrations to mark Kizimkazi Day at Mkunguni Village in Kizimkazi Ward, South Unguja District.

The vice-president is the initiator of the day in Zanzibar where the public participates in various sports event and hold discussions on plans and strategies that can be employed to foster development in their areas in collaboration with leaders.

"The government will continue taking stern legal measures against officials who derail the government’s efforts to bring development to the public through corruption and embezzlement of public funds," she stressed.

She added that the people must strengthen unity among them and identify challenges they face and cooperate with their local leaders to find solutions for them. "As the first person to get top level leadership from Kizimkazi in Zanzibar, I will continue working with you in finding solutions to challenges facing the public in this village including water woes," she noted.

The vice-president urged residents of Kizimkazi to allocate land for building a kindergarten, which is still a challenge in the village. She promised to support construction of the nursery school as a way to address the challenge facing the education sector in the village.

Earlier in their message to the vice-president, Kizimkazi residents and the ceremony’s Organising Secretary, Mr Said Ramadhani Mgeni, commended Ms Hassan and the Union and Zanzibar governments for the good effort that has seen an upsurge in domestic revenue.

They expressed their confidence and belief in the 5th Phase Government leadership that domestic revenue will be utilised to boost the country's economy and bring sustainable development to the general public.

The Kizimkazi residents promised to uphold peace, unity and continue praying for the government as well as extending their support in implementation of development projects. Some of the leaders who had an opportunity to speak at the event urged the public to uphold peace and unity in their areas.
