250bn/- to improve Mwanza water supply

WATER supply and sanitation services in Mwanza Region are set to improve following the 104 million Euros (about 250bn/-) that have been injected in various projects.

The development partners with the amount of money they have injected in brackets are the European Investment Bank (45 million Euros), the French Development Agency (45 million Euros) and Tanzanian government (11.4 million Euros). Managing Director of Mwanza Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MWAUWASA) Anthony Sanga said here over the weekend that the soft loan will now facilitate implementation of the water projects under the pipeline.

Engineer Sanga mentioned the areas that will benefit from the projects under Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project (LVWATSAN) as Mwanza City, Ilemela Municipality, Magu District, Misungwi District and Lamadi town council.

“For years we have been busy improving water supplies and sanitation but this time we have secured the funds and the sanitation component, especially in schools and other public places, will get the top priority,” said Eng Sanga, adding that the projects will improve the pathetic situation in many school toilets and public areas like markets.

Already the first three projects of about 6bn/-were signed over the weekend, with Jonta Investment Company Ltd, White City International Contractors Limited and BENNET Contractors Limited tasked to execute the projects between next month and June next year.

The three companies, as per agreements, will construct the selected toilets for schools, public spaces and commercial buildings in Mwanza City Council and Ilemela Municipal Council as well as constructing simplified sewerage system in Mwanza City.

Engineer Sanga said the three projects will be the first in the entire package, noting that the other contracts for the remaining projects are due for signing anytime. He challenged the companies to deliver quality work to win donor confidence for possible increase of funding.

Ilemela Municipal Mayor Renatus Mlunga thanked the project financiers and government of Tanzania for supporting the projects, expressing optimism that communicable diseases like cholera will be controlled. “I hope these projects will help to eliminate dangerous communicable diseases like cholera that have been killing many people...

I urge my fellow politicians and members of the public to support these projects,” he said. The project signing ceremony was also witnessed by the Project Manager, Mr Abbas Pyarali and other officials from Mwauwasa, Mwanza and Ilemela city councils.
