Deputy President William Ruto has sparked fresh controversy following his latest series of cash donations at public forums.
DP Ruto is reported to have given out Sh18 Million in a record 48 hours – on Friday and Saturday alone.
The wave of generous giving by the deputy president is said to have begun on Friday in Kisii and Vihiga Counties where he was a chief guest at Harambees in two different schools. In the two schools, Ruto gave out a total of Sh7 Million, The Standard reports.
Ruto began at Ibeno Kenya Medical Training College in Nyaribare-Chache where he donated Sh3 Million in aid of the institute.
The self-proclaimed hustler later flew to Vihiga County for a funds drive at Malinda Secondary School where he donated Sh4 Million and commissioned the Last Mile electricity project in the area.
On Saturday, the DP reportedly gave a total of Sh11 Million to four schools in Kakamega and Bungoma Counties.
The first contribution was at St Peter’s Machine Secondary School in Likuyani Constituency in Kakamega where he donated Sh3 Million for the construction of a dining hall.
“Jubilee government values education and will ensure every Kenyan child gets quality education. Today, President Uhuru Kenyatta and I give Sh3 million towards the construction of the dining hall here,’’ Ruto said.
The Deputy President later headed to Tongaren Mixed Secondary School in Bungoma County where he donated Sh2 Million for the purchase of school land. He pledged an additional Sh3 Million for the construction of an administration block and classrooms in the same school.
The third function was at Sinoko Secondary School in Webuye East where Ruto donated Sh3 Million towards the construction of new classrooms.
The last fundraiser was at Milo Boys Secondary School in Webuye West Constituency, where the DP contributed Sh3 Million to aid in the establishment of an administration block.
While the receivers of the money are left applauding and praising the DP for some members of the public it is the source of the money that bothers them.
Nonetheless, last year amid controversy over his huge donations, Ruto told off critics and vowed to continue participating in fundraisers, saying “it is my source of blessings”.
Speaking at a church in Nairobi Ruto added: “It is more blessed to give than to receive and I find many people struggling with why people are giving in church, they have not discovered how to tap blessings.”
